Why Does the August SAT Fill Up So Quickly, and What Can I Do?

If you’re planning to take the SAT in August, you should know that seats can fill up very quickly, especially in densely populated areas. This may not be an issue in less populated regions, but I know it is a recurring problem in the NY metro area and many parts of California.

Why does this happen? For one, the August test is very popular. It’s a great time for seniors to get in one more attempt before applications are due, and it’s also ideal for first time test takers who want to get started early. I’m a big fan of the August exam because it gives students the entire summer to prepare without the added pressure of schoolwork and extracurriculars.

Another factor is availability. In many areas, schools are not yet open in August, which means fewer testing centers. Schools may not want to open early just to administer the SAT, and it can also be more difficult to find staff before the school year begins. The result is fewer seats at exactly the time demand is highest.

What can you do to improve your chances of getting a good spot? I recommend checking the SAT registration page regularly. We don’t know the exact date registration will open, but it is typically sometime in May or June, so keep an eye out. You are also welcome to email me to be added to my list, and I’ll send a notice once registration opens. When it does, try to register that same day. Waiting even a short time can mean your local centers fill up.

Also, don’t be too picky. If you find a reasonably close testing center, it’s best to take it rather than hold out for the perfect location.
